Students at Bowdoin College don't declare their academic major until the second semester of their second year. Intentionally designed this way, the college promotes interdisciplinary exploration before students dedicate their academic career toward a specific field of study. Celebrated every March, Declaration Day is the final day that second year students can declare their major. Students gather with academic staff at the heart of student life to celebrate with food and drinks as students paste their names on posters to physically mark their dedication to their academic program. For 2023, students gathered in the student union and posted multicolored sticky notes to this array of posters displayed on the union's colorful walls.
